Premiere Clarinet Without Organs II - Pulpesque

Only Connect Festival, Oslo, Norway

(Only Connect Festival review)
by Robert Barry, in Seismograf,
03.05.2026

[...] a thread of unorthodox instrumental preparations ran through the festival line-up, from Snæbjörnsdóttir’s activated tam-tams to an ingenious work for a disembodied wind instrument, performed by the duo Araia on Saturday night. Jorge Gómez Elizondo’s Clarinet without Organs II – Pulpesque (2026) was played by Elena Perales Andreu using just the mouthpiece of the instrument appended to a system of bright orange and green plastic tubes suspended over the stage like an octopus mid-autopsy. Her breath was channeled from one tube to the other, not with keys but a series of valves and taps, making the performance look more like plumbing than music, but the sound – cascades of great deep, breathy whooshes and tender whistles – was mesmerising.

Saxofón: Pablo Coello

Tomás Marco wrote for Scherzo:

"In Drifting, composed last year, the Mexican Jorge Elizondo develops a language that moves away from the usual orthodox avant-garde and seek paths toward a new time through the creation of unstable sound continuums that offer a sense of shifting fluidity throughout the work, written with great precision. I believe it achieves all its sonic objectives, and that is always of the utmost interest."

Some impressions from our concerts in Vienna and Linz a few weeks ago.

Many thanks to the fantastic team of the Suena Festival for our concert in Vienna and a special thanks to Sara Stevanović of the IGNM OÖ for our concert in Linz! Thanks to all that could join us to the concerts and the enriching and fruitful (pun intended) discussion with the composition students at the Bruckner Uni!!

And of course a very special thank you to the amazing LAB51 for our collaboration and premiering my piece, which I wrote specially for them this year!
